Rhinoplasty for Sculpted, Natural Results
Refine your nose’s appearance and improve breathing with rhinoplasty, a surgical solution for both cosmetic and functional concerns.
Refine your nose’s appearance and improve breathing with rhinoplasty, a surgical solution for both cosmetic and functional concerns.
At Balikian Facial Plastic Surgery, we take a comprehensive approach to rhinoplasty, one that considers not only aesthetics, but also structure, symmetry, and function. The goal is to deliver results that are both beautiful and breathable.
Rhinoplasty, also known as nose reshaping surgery, is performed to address both cosmetic concerns and functional breathing issues. Because the nose sits at the center of the face, even subtle refinements can dramatically enhance overall facial harmony.
For patients with nasal obstruction or dissatisfaction with their profile, rhinoplasty can be truly transformative, improving not just appearance, but quality of life.
Dr. Richard Balikian is double board-certified in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. With specialized training in both facial aesthetics and nasal function, he combines surgical precision with an artist’s eye to create natural-looking, balanced results that honor each patient’s unique anatomy.
“The best rhinoplasty is one you can’t see. It should complement your features, not distract from them.”
– Dr. Balikian
Rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. Once you are fully comfortable, Dr. Balikian will begin your customized surgical plan.
Depending on your anatomy and desired outcome, he may use one of two approaches:
Whether through an open or closed approach, Dr. Balikian personalizes each rhinoplasty to your facial proportions and goals—prioritizing both form and function.
Following your procedure, a nasal splint will be applied to support the new shape, and soft dressings may be used to aid healing. Rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgery, so you’ll be able to return home the same day with clear aftercare instructions.
Dr. Balikian and his expert staff will provide detailed guidance throughout your recovery to ensure optimal healing and long-lasting, natural-looking results.
Dr. Balikian’s advanced rhinoplasty technique eliminates the need for traditional nasal packing, making the recovery process significantly more comfortable for his patients. From your first post-op visit to your final results, Dr. Balikian will closely monitor your healing and provide personalized care every step of the way.
Rest is essential to a smooth recovery. Patients should plan to take time off work and avoid strenuous activities during the initial healing period.
Some swelling is expected due to the delicate nature of the nasal tissues. Most of it resolves within the first month, gradually revealing your new nose shape. Subtle swelling may persist for up to a year, especially at the nasal tip, but this is normal and part of the natural healing timeline.
Dr. Balikian goes beyond the standard of care by incorporating advanced technology to help his patients heal more efficiently and comfortably. One such innovation is ELIXIR MD™, an FDA-cleared light therapy system that uses targeted wavelengths to minimize swelling and bruising after rhinoplasty.
By taking this extra step, Dr. Balikian helps reduce downtime and enhances overall recovery, so you can enjoy your results sooner, with less discomfort.
Determining your candidacy for rhinoplasty begins with a personalized consultation with Dr. Balikian. In general, ideal candidates are in good physical health, have realistic expectations, and are non-smokers, or willing to stop smoking as directed before, during, and after surgery to support healing.
It’s also important that your nose has finished developing. Nasal growth typically completes around age 14 for girls and age 16 for boys. Performing surgery before this point can interfere with the natural maturation process.
Your consultation with Dr. Balikian is the first step in creating a more balanced and confident you. During this visit, he will carefully evaluate your facial proportions, skin quality, and nasal structure to determine if rhinoplasty is the right option. He’ll also review your medical history, including allergies, prior procedures, and your personal goals for surgery.
If you are a strong candidate, Dr. Balikian may use advanced imaging software to help visualize potential results and plan the most appropriate surgical approach. In some cases, he may recommend combining rhinoplasty with other facial procedures to achieve optimal harmony and facial balance.
You’ll also receive a detailed overview of the procedure, including how to prepare, what to expect during recovery, and how to care for your nose after surgery. Dr. Balikian is committed to making sure you feel informed and confident every step of the way and will answer all your questions during your visit to our San Diego office.

What makes Dr. Balikian’s approach to rhinoplasty unique?
Dr. Balikian combines surgical precision with an artist’s eye, using his background in facial anatomy and art history to create natural-looking results that enhance facial harmony. He customizes each procedure to the patient’s unique features and goals, often using advanced imaging and a combination of cosmetic and functional techniques to ensure optimal outcomes.
Will rhinoplasty change my entire face?
Rhinoplasty is designed to enhance your natural features, not change who you are. Dr. Balikian focuses on refining and rebalancing the nose so it blends harmoniously with the rest of your face. The goal is to look like yourself, only more confident and refreshed.
Will rhinoplasty help with breathing issues?
Yes. Functional concerns such as a deviated septum or collapsed nasal valves can be addressed during rhinoplasty. Dr. Balikian often combines cosmetic reshaping with structural correction to improve both appearance and breathing in a single procedure.
What’s the difference between a primary and revision rhinoplasty?
Primary rhinoplasty refers to your first nasal surgery. Revision rhinoplasty corrects or improves the results of a previous procedure. Dr. Balikian has extensive experience in both and offers customized strategies for patients who may need corrective or touch-up work.
How long does rhinoplasty surgery take?
Rhinoplasty typically takes between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure. This is performed on an outpatient basis, and patients go home the same day.
How long until I see my final rhinoplasty results?
Initial improvements can be seen once the swelling subsides, usually within the first 3–4 weeks. However, full refinement, especially at the nasal tip, can take up to 12 months as residual swelling gradually resolves.
Can rhinoplasty be combined with other facial procedures?
Absolutely. Dr. Balikian often performs rhinoplasty alongside procedures such as chin augmentation, lip lift, or facial fat transfer to achieve better overall balance and facial harmony. This will be discussed during your consultation if applicable.
Can I bring in photos of noses I like?
Yes. Bringing inspiration photos can help communicate your goals. However, Dr. Balikian will guide you toward a result that works with your individual anatomy and facial structure to ensure realistic, personalized outcomes, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Is rhinoplasty painful?
Most patients report minimal pain, often describing the recovery as more uncomfortable than painful. Dr. Balikian uses gentle techniques and avoids nasal packing, which significantly improves post-op comfort. Swelling, congestion, and mild bruising are normal but temporary.
Can rhinoplasty fix a crooked nose or hump?
Yes. Structural concerns like a dorsal hump, crooked bridge, or asymmetry can all be addressed during rhinoplasty. Dr. Balikian uses precise surgical techniques to restore both cosmetic and functional balance to the nose.
